Roodepoort Project: Roof Restoration with Universal Paints

Roodepoort Roof Restoration

A professional roof restoration can give an ageing roof a new lease on life while improving its protection against rain, sunlight and changing weather conditions.

This combination helped provide waterproofing protection and a durable, UV-resistant finish while completely transforming the appearance of the roof.

Waterproofing as Part of the Roof Restoration

Waterproofing is an important stage of any roof restoration, particularly when preparing a property for the rainy season. Weak points, hairline cracks and ageing coatings can allow moisture to penetrate the roof surface and potentially lead to further damage over time.

Flexi Rubber is a new-generation, water-based pure acrylic waterproofing coating that forms a heavy-duty rubberised layer designed to help seal out water. Its flexible formulation provides excellent stretch and elastic recovery, allowing the coating to accommodate minor movement in the roofing surface.

This flexibility is particularly useful on roofs, which naturally expand and contract as temperatures change throughout the day.

Flexi Rubber can also help seal vertical and horizontal hairline cracks, providing an added layer of protection against moisture penetration. Other key features and benefits include its UV resistance, quick-drying properties and low VOC formulation.

Another advantage of Flexi Rubber is that it can be overcoated with compatible Universal Paints roof coatings. This makes it possible to create a more complete roof coating system, with the waterproofing layer helping protect the substrate before the final decorative and protective coating is applied.

Finishing with Roof Acrylic

Once the waterproofing system was in place, the roof was ready for its final protective coating.

Roof Acrylic is a water-based pure acrylic coating developed specifically for long-term exterior roof protection. It offers excellent adhesion, UV resistance and high water resistance, making it well suited to roofing surfaces that are continually exposed to the elements.

UV protection is particularly important during a roof restoration because roofing surfaces experience high levels of direct sunlight. Continuous UV exposure can contribute to fading and deterioration of unsuitable coatings over time. Using a coating specifically formulated for exterior roof applications helps provide greater long-term protection.

Roof Acrylic also offers a life expectancy of approximately 10 years when correctly specified, prepared and applied, making it a durable option for roof maintenance and restoration projects.

The Charcoal shade selected for this project completed the transformation, giving the ageing roof a bold, modern finish while complementing the rest of the property.

Giving an Old Roof New Life

The Roodepoort project demonstrates why a successful roof restoration involves more than simply applying a new colour.

By first applying a dedicated waterproofing coating and then finishing with a durable roof paint, AGK Trading created a system designed to address both the functional and aesthetic requirements of the roof.

The result is a roof that looks significantly refreshed while receiving added protection against South Africa’s changing weather conditions.
